As president of a student organization (ACM-ECE) in charge of promoting student development, part of my job is finding ways to get people pumped up about pursuing CS related fields of work. This past november a good friend of mine, Yamil, started talking about a Hackathon he was organizing with the help of Startups of Puerto Rico and how any serious programmer must attend. A Hackathon presents a unique venue for programmers, an opportunity to meet other “hackers” and tech industry representatives in a friendly environment. During the event I had the opportunity to meet a community that I had thought to be absent in Puerto Rico (the Startup Community).
The twelve hour hackathon was an intense experience, one of the best experiences a hacker could ever have. You bring your ideas and spend an entire day coding alongside people who share a same interest as you. As an incentive, there was food, beverages and SWAG, but the part that interested me the most was the resources available. If you had any questions, there were people willing to answer questions, or at least point you in the right direction in a friendly environment.
After the event, I contacted Yamil, and told him of my interest to bring that activity over to the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus, thus the 2nd Hackathon by HackPR was born.
The 2nd HackPR Hackathon will commence at 8:00am on March 2, 2013 in the University of Puerto Rico, Mayagüez Campus. Registration is now open for both students and startups. You may find news and information on our Facebook event and on @HackPuertoRico.
